A riveting musical "comedy of errors" that turns into a searing tragedy, extremely well acted by Guru Dutt, Rehman, Johnny Walker, and the exquisite Waheeda Rehman who never looked lovelier than lit up by moonlight here. Strong Sufi tropes figure in this film, such as the crucial importance of self-sacrificing faithful friendship, not interfering with God's Will with your own infatuated egotism, and being "ruined" in Love (analogous for being annihilated/fana in God/Allah).

A classic movie from our Orson Welles of India ,Guru Dutt .It was a real tragedy that he left the world suddenly in 1964 at a young age ,otherwise we could have seen more classic films like on the cinema screen. Films of today are very frivolous, popular for are short time ,forgotten tomorrow. 60 years old and yet it retains its classic quality.
