Stretching comedy scenes for punchline, rock tunes, ironically, in a period piece that resists cultural onslaught etc, diminished viewing exprnc. Feminist confidence by KS's character in first half (rebellious, shirt donned, norm-buster rebuking suitors at homefront, and as social activist) stood in contrast to her helplessness in second half. Women's struggles to be made real didn't need Thatha's cancer as cover. Okay movie with a positive message. Ismath was superb.

Replying to Rajeshwari V, can you show a shred of evidence where Hindi is being asked to be made mandatory? Did you look at the New Education Policy and what it asks? It is allowing students to choose any langauge of their choice freely and also emphasizes subjects to be taught in the regional language for better absorption. Where did you get this "Mandatory" clause from?

A good movie which revolves around fighting against language and cultural imposition and at the same time embracing the modern thoughts such as gender equality and preserving the cultural identity. Basically you preserve the Tamil language to protect cultural identity and at the same time you fight against the imposition from culture - male domination.

Language and cultural imposition happened when we were ruled by Mughals and then by Westerners. We accepted all the trespasses by our invaders under the sword or gun point and converted ourselves to alien religions just to survive. Now we are making a hue and cry to learn additional languages that originated within our country. This is denial of culture to both yourself and to your next generation as most likely they will be influenced or affected by your closed mindset. Common sense dictates, we should have an open mind and take in anything and everything worthy irrespective of the source

There is no point honestly... And you see these are people who are working or residing in other countries, so much for their pattru. This is not an old school thought, that's what is horrible. New generation, people in the age group of 26 to 50 are thinking like this. Learning a language has become a political thing now. Interestingly, they want everyone on TN to speak in Tamil. I wish other states did the same thing to the Tamil people residing in their states.

Learning languages should come by cultural values and credit systems. The faster India moves towards value and merit based learning the better but, we always seek quotas. next is Language-based reservation is sure to happen, as it is a state requirement in many. Have 100 points for mother-tongue, and 100 points for other languages. Let us all learn what we want and how we want to use those 100 credit points. that's it. problems solved

You cannot raise or save your language by ignoring or demeaning another. Tamil is one of the oldest continuously spoken languages and has not survived so long only to get lost because its speakers learnt additional languages. While I disagree your viewpoint of Tamil being ONLY philosophical language, my point is, loss will be to those who have closed mindsets and baseless hatred towards other languages. Additionally, I can also promise you that, ignoring other languages will neither secure nor propagate the Tamil language as being promoted, as you will need to do a different set of actions for that. [Contd.]

First, I said, "Other languages" and you jumped to "Hindi" which shows your closed mind set. Nobody is crying that you did not learn. Let me correct you first. Your message, "While I disagree your viewpoint of Tamil being ONLY philosophical language", read my message 10 times and see if you can understand it correctly!! Why would anyone want to go to graveyard in the middle of the night? Learning a language is need based, learnt Kannada, Danish when sojourned in Bangalore and Denmark. After that never used them. Maybe I did not set the context correctly in my previous posts. Learning additional languages could be 'need based' for you and me, but for the next gen children in public schools in TN, it is an opportunity which is being taken away due to petty politics and blind haters who back it up. DMK run schools teach Hindi, Sanskrit and other languages while it issues propaganda against these very languages in the pretext of saving Tamil. There is a bigger conspiracy in language politics and yours and my next gen is the real victim. Innum puriyalanna, kastham dhan.

Don't try to create a baseless opinion, I can see you are obsessed against DMK... try to come out of your clutches... you are confused and not clear in your understanding between learning another language (it is only for communication) and imposing another language... Stop your gibberish with your intended tainting and taunting. There is no need to bring your garbage politics in movie comments.

I can only wake someone who is asleep - Not someone who is acting as one. Anti - Hindi movement and DMK are two sides of a same coin and are inseparable. They set the tone in TN against Hindi during 1980s. I am not bringing anti-DMK sentiment here, but just stating the fact how they set the narrative while their kids and grand kids learn these languages and their schools teach them. They could very well be indirectly responsible for the way you are thinking about other languages.

Rajeshwari V - We are also the same state where the CM is saying there is no money to rebuild school infra, pay salary to teachers, make the part time teachers permanent, and so on. Do you know the education quality TN students receive in public schools? Do you know how many KV school request petitions from our TN districts are lying with central education ministry? The same MLAs/MPs who shout and screech against Hindi in stage, are forced to ask for KV schools in their own districts due to public pressure. Just answer this, Will any politicians put their child in a public school system?

I'm always curious who is forcing us to learn Hindi. Ironically, I was in a team (in a US based company) where majority of the members were from TN and they spoke in Tamil even in official meetings, and the Non-Tamil speakers were struggling. Now in that occasion, who forced others to learn another language? I can't post this question to mallus or telugu or other language people as 'only' Tamil people does the propaganda to not force others to learn a language. Can someone please help explain?

Mallus from Kerala know Malayalam just like you and I know Tamil as these are native to those respective regions where they come from. I didnt get where "forced" angle coming in play here? Only thing "forced" here is the attitude of some people toeing their political masters and stopping everyone else from learning new languages. BTW the Mallus, Telugus, Kannadigas, Rajasthani, Kashmiri etc all know Hindi and they learnt without anyone forcing it on them. So, they will all have a common language outside English. When you embrace other languages, you actually embrace more of indian culture IMHO

How many Indian languages a Hindi wala knows other than Hindi.. ? @sudan g, I already told why we can't ask this question to Hindi Wale. My question was simple - when Tamil people don't want others to force any languages, why do you do it to others? If you go to a Pani Puri wala, will you not force him to learn Tamil just so he had a shop in TN? will you speak to him in a language he will understand - so he is not forced to learn another language? Btw, except for 3 out of 30+ states, no one's mother tongue is Hindi. I don't know whom you call Hindi Wale.

But got to know the reality of all north states, who lost their mother touge becase of Hindi. Tamil nadu took a correct stand on this. But there is a hidden agenta and manipulation in Tamil history in this moive as well as. trying to portrait the leader who didn't stand on fight against hindi.
