@Biju A, It was definitely slow, long, not much action/thrill to it, you are right. However, this seems to be the daily life of most Indian women. Most of them work LONG hours (often unappreciated), don't have much action or thrill in their lives (only action they have is cooking 5-7 dishes + slaving away at home). I hope you can think and be more aware of our mothers, sisters, + wife. Just think about this: Imagine if you were the one in that lady's position, how would you feel?

Not true and it is dishonest to generalise all Indian husbands by painting them with the same brush. My grandfather does all the chores from cooking to cleaning to washing clothes in his home. My grandmother has some knee pain so she couldnโ€™t do much and when she volunteers to do something, my grandfather rejects it. They love each other very much.

Art M. - That is exactly the point - that your grandfather does all the chores because your grandmother is unwell. So, the household chores by itself is not considered as a man's responsibility too. However, I really appreciate your grandfather's concerns for his wife.

Art M. - "Not all men" argument rarely helps. While I appreciate and respect the fact that your grandfather is unlike them, there are far many women out there who have to grind on a daily basis to care for their families. This movie is not demeaning "men" but making them realize the plight of women in similar situations. Please don't discredit the livid experiences of women who are suffering such trauma.

I am a Nigerian man and this goes out to all the men. As a man, you have to learn to see every woman as a human being. Have some decency and empathy. If you have a wife, treating her as equal doesn't make you less of a man because she is a part of you. Be conscious of her well being and everything that happens in your home. That your generations or ancestors treated women subserviently doesn't mean you have to do the same today. Don't allow anyone, not even your parents to decide how you want to run your family.

What a beautifully crafted and performed storyline with a hidden subliminal thread of how far an Indian man is willing to suppress the voice of a women (a.k.a his wife) behind archaic traditions and an effort to maintain his masculinity and sexist supremacy both inside and outside his home. The most touching aspect was how the film maker has shot all the sounds of the kitchen to depict behind which the voice of women dies down. Epic dance at the end was amazing!

Its an eye opener, a must watch. the only thing is the initial 40-45 mins is a routine day in a home and kitchen purposely shown to make the viewer feel the pain and boredom of the chore. Feminism doesn't mean anti-tradition and anti-men. Just means equality and choice to pick a path.

If this is true, then you have my sympathies. You know, it does not have to be men OR women in kitchens. It can be both husband and wife in the kitchen too. Many men are better cooks and many women are better at managing money etc. Let each person bring their best to the table. After all the benefit will be for their own partnership and family.

Acclaimable movie, with deep meaning and apt acting. This movie is probably more suited for people, in matrimonial search, to make sure what to expect. Instead of tagging as male domination, could see it as difference on expectation and reality. Of course husbands can help on house hold chores. Hats off to all Women who take care of these tiresome chores, for years with tolerance, without complaining (like mother-in-law in the movie), Lucky to have you in any family.

It was badly thought in the childhood by putting line between women and men work. actually women do more work than men. i liked the story men and women must share their work. Respect them. Every men should admit and felt shameful if we still follow this kind of attitude. women work in the kitchen is never appreciated. Hats off to all women .

Agree with you on that. However, are you aware one-third of Keralite women don't have permission to sit in their visiting rooms? It is only saved for men! It is so prevalent in one community. This director claims he is very observant, that is why irrespective of coming from a Christian household he was able to find the inner workings of a Hindu family. Ironically, he somehow reached the bedrooms of Hindus without going through the visiting rooms of others!

What an excellent movie, being a man husband and father I am ashamed: The cruelty some women have to go through: I feel sorry for these men too to some extent for their ignorance in this day an age: In summary such relationships are no different to sleeping and having children with your help or maid: Such cruelty also was there in the west , it is not about the country or culture itโ€™s all about the mindset: The same result of all the rituals can still be achieved but without being cruel:

I am pretty sure that this movie received the most number of comments on einthusan and it reflects the image of society we live in and are blind fold to the many of bad practices in the name of customs. Indeed this movie is an mirror to such members of the society who thinks that women role is just limited in doing household chores. Its an excellent movie made and though I don't come from Kerala, I totally understand the message given. Soon in future I guess that forcing wife to take care of house will amount to cruelty under Marriage law.

One of the best I have seen. Simple yet powerful storytelling. The first 30 minutes of the movie was slow moving and repetitive, but I realized it was necessary to show what the daily routine is and how robotic she becomes. I felt so exasperated in the entire movie after. And outraged with the characters played by the husband and father in law. It proves what good actors those 2 men were as well. It is upsetting that this still exists in the world today.

She has feelings, thoughts and has a say in all matters. Hats off to Joe Baby director for this awesome movie. ๐Ÿ‘Œ The climax is great , actually that idiotic husband & father in law deserves a slap too not just waste water. Still sadly this indian society considers marriage as a end point for a girl to think or go to job and be independent. That should change. This movie would be a welcome change.
