Brahmin or non brahmin is not the issue, this story has historical mistakes, that is the real issue with the book and the movie.. I was really wishing Mani Ratnam corrected it, but, sadly he did nothing about it.. Its also sad to see people from TN have no historical understanding and are glorifying this story as history of Cholas!! Very sad to see that they think so low of Cholas or Pandiyas..

The person that wrote the book, The director of this film (Maniratnam) are Brahmins. Trisha = Brahmin. Aishwarya Rai = Brahmin. Vikram = Not a Tamil. Parthiban/Sarath Kumar/Jayam Ravi = Telugu. Karthik = Half Telugu. ALL Are Brahmins & Telugu. This is Anti-Tamil Conspiracy.

I think Mani Ratnam tried to adapt the story (book), with its historical flaws. Which is fine if he thinks it's a good story. I also think that most people know that the story has historical flaws, but can enjoy it for the story.

So far watched 1 hour of the movie, and I paused. The background music is fine, but can improve. Songs and stageplays are pathetic. tunes are horrible as usually by ARR copying and messing it up with computer modulations. Totally, not conforming to 2000 year back scenario, and sounds more like rappish and hooligan cooing. I am pretty positive that is not Tamizh culture was. Pathetic songs totally unrelated and time waste. poor direction so far

This comment is something I don't understand. What is unrealistic about this. This is most realistic in terms of Story (Based on lot of Chola dynasty documentations from 10th and 11th century), filming and direction . It may not be realistic if you take the unrealistic movies as a baseline Incidents are true. How it happened is fictional. Nandhini is fictional. But Pandyan characters lived in 10th century. Forts, jewels all have references from Early 11th century paintings

Very poorly produced and directed movie. The Chozhas were not only very powerful but also were very wealthy and sophisticated (conquered a good part of India and many countries in SE Asia; also traded with many countries) But they are shown in very poor light in this movie. They appear as though this movie takes place in about 1000 BC and not in 1000 AD.

The Chozha conquest of Southeast Asia began with Rajendra Chozha around the year 1025 when he attacked the Srivajaya empire there. The events shown in the movie happened quite earlier. During Arunmozhi's time, the Chozhas had not gone further than Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean and had barely gone more north west than Odisha.

I do know the history. They did not go from rags to riches and from uncultured to cultured in 50 years (Why are they wearing mostly rags in the movie? Did they not have any barbers? They did not just fight, get drunk and dance like barbarians. On the contrary they were very sophisticated and built great temples. I can go on…) The depiction of Pandia Nadu solders is even worse. Did they just come out of the caves?

Even the Therukkoothu artists in small villages in Tamil Nadu appear in better costumes. (Where did the producers spend all the money?) The dances seem to show as if they were the barbarians living in 1000 BC. The only two people who appear reasonably well in this movie are Trisha and Aishwarya Rai! The music is good but a better singer could have sung the first song.

Sick work. Rahman has not delivered anything good after his first 5-6 films. No idea why is he even compared with ilayaraja. Maniratnam thinks he is god of indian cinema. Camera works and angles, sets, screen and stage plays are poor there is no clarity in expression of the larger mass.. everyone is perhaps in their own understanding of the events lot of confusions.. all for now. No sense of History ! They've acted as though they act in a normal film. Music and Lyrics are so childish... No wonder Vairamuthu opted out of it. AR Rahman has made the songs look like Pop songs. Jayam Ravi and Karthi scenes were nice too. I wish every character has a bit more involvement. The thrill I had when reading the book was not exactly reflected in the movie. But it was worth for the screenplay and performance.

When one looks at the whole movie in totality, it seems that the director wanted to show that Tamizhs were uncultured and uncivilized and only brahmins (who worship mostly Lords Krishna and Ram) brought arts and culture to TN. What is the need for the director to show Kamsa dance when introducing Kundavai? Some dance pertaining to Lord Siva could have been shown.

How many people in TN know much about Kamsa? Lords Muruga and Siva have been widely worshiped in TN for thousands of years but not Lord Krishna (Krishna is relatively a new phenomenon in TN). The hero is supposed to be on a serious mission but he is shown as salivating at every beautiful woman he comes across!

Ramayanam & Mahabharatham were in TN at least since 1 BC, check out Silpathikaram. Tamilians were accommodating while protecting and growing their own. That Dance scene is actually in the Novel. Vaishnavam existed like Samanam and Bodham along with Saivam. We were living together and in peace. The problem was when around 13-14 century , i.e. towards the end of Chola dynasty when non Tamilians started to rule TN, they fell for the cunningness of Aryans because they just did not understand Tamil Heritage

Awesome movie! Actual novel is very long and detailed and I applaud the entire team with Mani Ratnam at the helm for compressing into 2 parts without losing the essence of the whole theme! Congratulations! Can't wait for the part 2!

Really good production. Except the ending made no sense. The whole ship battle was super unrealistic, unnecessary & simply not fitting the script. But otherwise. it was fantastic movie !!

Please refrain from swearing in foul language. I know the "f" is fashionable to use,but we are all watching Tamil movies. If you don't like the movie, don't watch. Feel like commenting, Just say it wasn't up to your mark. I am finding more and more the use of foul lanuage seems to be a competition. Are we trying to prove a point who can swear the most? Thank you.

FIRST THING NO ONE CAN SAY THE REAL HISTORY. THERE ARE ONLY SOME SPECULATIONS BASED ON THE INSCRIPTIONS FROM SOME HINDU TEMPLES. SO MANIRATNAM CAN'T RISK CHANGING THE WELL-KNOWN PONNIYAN SELVAN STORY. I FEEL LIKE THE CHARACTERS ARE NOT SO DEEP. I HAVE READ THE BOOK PREVIOUSLY. SO IT WAS EASY FOR ME TO CONNECT TO EACH AND EVERY CHARACTER. BUT IF SOMEONE WHO HAVEN'T READ THE STORY, I THINK THEY MIGHT FIND IT DIFFICULT TO CONNECT WITH THE CHARACTERS. IT FEELS LIKE MANIRATNAM MADE THIS MOVIE FOR OOK READERS. OVERALL EVERYTHING IS GOOD. BUT NOVEL WAS NOT SUMMARIZED WELL IN THE FIRST PART.

I'm a Sri Lankan Buddhist. According to the history, Buddhist monks never begged Arunmozhi to rule Sri Lanka like in this movie. Also, the Chola army occupied only the northern part of Sri Lanka for a short time until the arrival of King Vijayabahu of Sri Lanka. He defeated them and expelled them.

Check the inscriptions in Anuradhapura, it is there; You are right partially, the whole part of northern srilnka of paddy fields were occupied by Chozhas; Sinhalese went and hid in the mountains; Chozhas didn't get defeated by Vijayabahu, pandyas were the once who defeated them since Vijayabahu was their ally, he wrote in Anuradhapura stating he defeated. Please check inscriptions in thanjavur and Anuradhapura for proof, it is there

All Hype but nothing intriguing. Novel itself is manipulated history with fictional Characters, Main Ratnam failed to bring the wow factor. Music was the worst, feels like AR Rahman lost his touch. With so much Star power, Director definitely failed to produce a magnum opus. This is why the movie failed outside TN. Many of my Non-Tamil friends did not even understand the Story and the lag definitely killed the movie.

Kantaara is far better content even with low budget than this high budget overhyped sunniyan selvan. Suriya is better choice than vikram for this role. Shankar is better than nani ratnam for such movie.
