Actually, they were invented (or a form of sunglasses) as long back as the 11th century. The Inuits used a sort of sun goggles to shield their eyes from the glare of the sun reflecting of the snow/ice. The Chinese in the 12th century were the first to use glass. So yes, by 1945 they were well developed and widely available.
