Having brought up in Kannur/Kasargod part of Kerala I can closely relate to the folklore and story. We have been taught to value and believe in the power of the Theyyam(Kolam) since childhood, but were never explained what was behind all these traditions and customs. We were scared as children in the name of Gods rather than faith. The story makes sense now. I have seen the performers perform with absolute devotion during my childhood. Now that I have grown up and seen instances where economical/ caste/financial aspects are prioritised over the devotion.
